"Are they Bollywood films?" Yes, they are. But they are also very good films, and they are worth checking out. You can find them on Netflix and/or Amazon Prime. I hope you catch some (any) of these, let me know if you do and what you think! =)
1st on the list is Padman, it is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a man who started producing sanitary pad at a low cost for women at rural villages around India. It is a beautiful and important film.
Next on the list is Dangal. Another movie based on a real life story, this is based on the Phogat family, the dad Mahavir Singh Phogat, and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari whom he trained in wrestling. Greta went on to became the 1st Indian woman to win a Gold Medal in Wrestling in the 2010 Commonwealth Games (SPOILERS!), I found this to be an extremely moving and powerful film.
Now I am putting two films together as they touch on the same topic, but with different approaches. OMG Oh My God and PK are 2 great movies that discuss Religion and the power churches (of all denominations) hold over people. They are really interesting.
Now, for Prime's latest release: Gully Boy, is the story of an aspiring rapper living in the slums of Mumbai. It is loosely based on the lives of two Indian rappers, Divine and Naezy and Ranveer Singh is simply amazing on it. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too. Zoya Akhtar is one of my favourite directors, I would recommend watching anything that woman puts her hands on because she is magical.
One of my favourite films, Rock On! follows the story of 4 friends who are in a rock band together. The band fails, the friendships ends but years later one of them tries to bring the band back together. Like with Gully Boy, great performances and excellent soundtrack. Also there's a sequel but it's *whisper* not as good.
